KIIT School of Architecture & Planning (KSAP), Bhubaneswar, Odisha students participated in an enriching Kathkuni Architecture workshop in Naggar, Himachal Pradesh, hosted by The Himalayan Brothers Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (HBTACH) during the study trip, organized by ExplorArchi. This immersive two-day’s workshop provided the students with a unique opportunity to learn the intricate techniques of Kathkuni architecture, guided by the esteemed master craftsman, Ses Ram Thakur.
During the workshop, participants delved into the traditional methods of constructing Kathkuni models, blending new and old design elements to create beautiful and innovative structures. The hands-on experience allowed students to gain a deeper understanding of this earthquake-resistant architectural style, which is renowned for its use of interlocking wooden beams and stones without nails or joints. They designed and built structures such as temples, residential buildings and cafes gaining practical experience in intricate joints, wood and stone layering techniques, fenestration, and roofing techniques unique to Kathkuni Architecture. This immersive experience equips students with the knowledge to incorporate these sustainable techniques into modern design, enriching their learning process and fostering innovation rooted in tradition.
